DISCOVER MORE ABOUT SURFACE AND SUSTAINABILITY

REDUCING CARBON IMPACT

· Lower carbon product design: The commitment to reducing the carbon intensity of devices is highlighted, with significant investments in designing for a smaller manufacturing footprint. This includes reducing waste, using recycled and repurposed materials, and improving circuit boards. Each generation of devices shows improvement, with the Surface Laptop Studio estimated to have a 30% reduction in total carbon emissions compared to its predecessor, the Surface Book 13”.

· Supply chain emission reductions: Microsoft is addressing environmental concerns alongside customer needs in manufacturing and transportation. This is achieved by incentivizing suppliers to reduce emissions, optimizing logistics, expanding customer choice for lower-carbon freight modes, and decarbonizing key elements of the distribution network.

· Energy efficiency: Surface devices are designed to be energy-efficient, with all Surface laptop and tablet devices being ENERGY STAR certified. The focus is on energy efficiency and extending battery life.

DESIGNING WITH CIRCULARITY IN MIND

· Repairability: Emphasizes the importance of repairability and serviceability in extending the lifespan of devices. Enterprises are enabled to fix common hardware issues themselves, ensuring devices perform optimally for longer periods.

· Reusable, refurbishable, and recyclable: By 2025, the goal is to eliminate single-use plastics in packaging, and by 2030, ensure that packaging is 100% recyclable. Continuous integration of innovations and learnings from the most recyclable products into the rest of the product line is ongoing. Additionally, recycling is made convenient and secure through global recycling programs and data-wiping.

· Designed with recycled materials: In response to the negative environmental and social impacts of the increasing demand for raw materials, Surface is innovating by introducing recycled materials into product design, such as the industry-first Ocean Plastic Mouse.

INTEGRITY BUILD IN

· EPEAT rating: Microsoft Surface has achieved the highest possible rating, EPEAT Gold, for all newest generation laptops and tablets in 30 countries, including the US and Canada.

· Transparency to impact: To enhance transparency for customers and stakeholders, Microsoft publishes Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results in Eco Profiles. These profiles contain information about the product’s material composition, energy consumption, packaging, ecolabels, product recycling, and other environmental attributes.

· Reduction of hazardous materials: Microsoft ensures worldwide compliance for all hardware programs by restricting hazardous substances contained in devices.

· Responsibly made: Microsoft works with thousands of suppliers in over 100 countries, relying on them to support the mission of empowering every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. The partnership goes beyond building innovative technology and delivering solutions; it's about shared values, company identity, and managing businesses responsibly while collaborating.
