#MyLifeAtSoftcat – Millie Shepherdson, Order Fulfilment Team Leader

Millie Shepherdson 3

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I’m 28, married, and love all things dogs, food and travel. I’m also visually impaired and have been since I was born. However, my visual impairment doesn’t define me. It is a big part of my life, and accepting this has helped me to better navigate a world not built for disabilities or neurodivergences.

Why did you apply to join Softcat?

I knew quite a few people at Softcat already and had only ever heard positive things about the culture and inclusion. I saw a role advertised that not only suited my experience and skills, but it was within an area of the business that I could see myself long term so I took the plunge!

What was the application and joining process at Softcat like?

So positive! I was able to speak through the role with recruitment beforehand and the team that due to my visual impairment I would struggle to complete the online assessment. A phone call was therefore arranged which was no trouble at all.

Tell us the best thing about your job?

The people! I’m so lucky to work for a company that truly puts employees first. The inclusive and diverse culture that we have developed and maintain is truly what keeps me here.

How does Sofcat support you with your disability?

Before I joined, I asked for larger screens in the office which was done in time for my start date. I also requested a larger laptop, have had a desk mat to help with glare, and I also have the lights by my desk turned off to support with my light sensitivity. Nothing is ever too much trouble for the company. Having the confidence to speak up can be hard, but Softcat makes it so easy.

Tell us what the Empowering Disability and Neurodiversity (EDI) network means to you?

We started the network to create a space for people to support, empower and educate each other, but it has become so much more than this. It’s an amazing community of individuals who can trust each other, ask for advice, make friends and share similar lived experiences. It gives us all the confidence to embrace our disabilities and neurodivergences; and be ourselves in the workplace and outside too!

What difference can the EDN network make to anyone currently at or thinking of joining Softcat?

Support, advocacy and empowerment, whether you have a disability or neurodivergence or are wanting to educate yourself, there’s a place for everyone and we embrace our community.

What would you say to a friend who’s thinking of applying for a role at Softcat?

Do it, YESTERDAY! Throw yourself in, ask all the questions and most importantly, just be yourself.

What single thing are you most proud of in your time at Softcat so far?

My progression and development. My disability has never held me back and if anything, it has enabled me to champion diversity and inclusion in a management position. It’s something I’m truly passionate about and will continue to do.
