Assess overview

The first step when considering the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is to assess how your organisation currently stores, secures, manages and accesses personal data. It’s important to understand your starting position in order to know what work you need to do to prepare for GDPR. This assessment is necessary to identify the changes that need to happen before 25th May 2018. Once this assessment is complete, you will find you are in a better position to ensure you comply with the regulation.

Where to start?

This first step is to understand how you will comply with GDPR so you can identify areas that need to be focused on initially. It is important to have a full understanding of GDPR. To achieve this, it may be helpful to consider the below:

  1. What will the impact of GDPR be on your organisation?
  2. What do the regulations mean to your organisation, and how will they affect your operations and staff?
  3. Is there any risk? What are the potential implications?

Create an action plan

Reviewing your current position will help you create a comprehensive action plan, in which you can prioritise key areas to be addressed in the short term, identify the right people across your organisation for each task, and draw up a timeline. This will reduce the impact of the regulation and minimise risk ahead of the May 2018 deadline. The end goal is for all personal data to be protected efficiently.
