Chief Technologist - Cyber Security

As I stepped into the buzzing halls of Cisco Live 2025 in sunny San Diego, I couldn’t help but feel like I was boarding a high-speed train into the future of cyber security. The energy was electric, the conversations forward-looking, and the announcements? Game-changing.

Representing Softcat as Chief Technologist for Cyber Security, I was proud to be there - not just as an attendee, but as a partner. As one of Cisco’s top strategic allies in the UK, we’re deeply invested in helping our customers navigate and operationalise the innovations unveiled at events like this.

First stop: Hybrid Mesh Firewall

The journey began with a major reveal: Cisco’s Hybrid Mesh Firewall architecture. Imagine a security system that stretches across your entire digital landscape—data centres, campuses, branches, and the cloud—yet operates with the precision of a single control tower. That’s what this new architecture delivers, with Security Cloud Control (SCC) at the helm. Devices like the Secure Firewall 6100 and 200 Series form the backbone, while ThousandEyes integration ensures you can see and respond to threats across the full stack.

Next station: Universal ZTNA

As the train picked up speed, we arrived at Universal ZTNA—Cisco’s bold reimagining of Zero Trust. This isn’t just about users and devices anymore, it’s about AI agents too. With intelligent automation becoming the norm, Cisco’s approach ensures that identity, posture, and behaviour are continuously evaluated. Duo and Secure Access work in tandem to adjust access dynamically, based on real-time risk.

Duo Identity Intelligence: smarter security

Then came a smart twist: Duo Identity Intelligence. Think of it as a trust radar, constantly scanning for risky users and devices. It brings real-time trust scoring into play, deeply integrated with Secure Access to automate enforcement and reduce manual overhead.

The brain of the operation: Security Cloud Control

At the heart of it all is Security Cloud Control (SCC), the conductor of this cyber security symphony. SCC allows organisations to define policies based on business intent and risk, then apply them consistently across hardware, software, and cloud-native services. It’s automation, auditability, and alignment all in one.

Enter Agentic AI Security

With AI agents becoming digital co-workers, Cisco has introduced Agentic AI Security—a framework that ensures these agents operate within strict identity and policy boundaries. Every action is logged and every input monitored. Hypershield and Duo provide runtime enforcement, keeping AI operations secure and accountable.

Live Protect: Patching Without the Pause

One of the most practical innovations? Live Protect. It’s Cisco’s answer to the patching dilemma: how do you fix vulnerabilities without downtime? With Live Protect, micro patches are delivered instantly via SCC—no reboots, no disruptions. It’s a huge leap forward in reducing exposure windows.

Hypershield meets Silicon One and NVIDIA

Finally, Cisco announced that Hypershield now runs on Silicon One and NVIDIA BlueField DPUs. This means high-performance and inline security enforcement at the hardware level—perfect for AI workloads and high-throughput environments where performance can’t be compromised.

Market signals: why this matters

These innovations aren’t happening in a vacuum. According to the latest forecast from IDC, global spend on cyber security is set to increase by 12.2% by the end of 2025. The drivers? GenAI, cloud adoption, and SASE architectures—all areas Cisco is doubling down on. Cisco’s own Cybersecurity Readiness Index shows that 88% of organisations face significant staffing gaps, making automation and unified platforms like SCC more critical than ever.
