Tell us about yourself?

Hi, I’m Alicia. I’ve been with Softcat for just over 10 years, starting out as a Corporate Account Manager before transitioning into the Public Sector team, where I now work as an Internal Client Manager. I spent most of that time based in Manchester, but I’ve recently relocated back home to Northern Ireland.

Describe your role and what it entails

As an Internal Client Manager within the Public Sector division, I have the privilege of working alongside one of our most experienced Client Directors, with a focus on the Emergency Services vertical. Our customer base primarily includes Police Forces and Ambulance Services located across the UK. My role involves ensuring that client accounts are maintained to a high operational standard and acting as the first point of contact for any quote, renewal, or order-related requests. I also coordinate with internal specialists and external vendors to support customer needs, enabling the Client Director to concentrate on identifying and developing new opportunities.

Tell us the best thing about your job?

One of the best parts of my role is the daily interaction with customers, which I find incredibly rewarding. I also really value the relationships I’ve built across multiple departments within Softcat, giving me great visibility into how different teams operate. Because of the nature of the role, no two days are the same. Some days are more sales-driven, while others are focused on operational tasks. You never quite know what kind of request will land on your desk, which keeps things dynamic and engaging.

How has your Softcat experience been so far and is there anything you’d like to share with us which has been a highlight in your career?

My Softcat career has been an incredible journey. I joined the company in 2015 as a Corporate Account Manager, bringing with me a background in sales (I was the annoying door-to-door salesperson). If I could succeed at knocking doors then I assumed that B2B sales would be a breeze, all I had to do was pick up the phone, right? I quickly learned otherwise. After six months, I realised that traditional sales didn’t play to my strengths. What I truly excelled at was responding to customer needs, ensuring quotes were accurate and delivered on time. That insight led me to transition into the Sales Support team, joining Public Sector - a move that marked the real beginning of my career at Softcat. From there, things accelerated. I progressed through the ranks quickly and eventually stepped into management.

One of the standout moments came just two years into my Softcat journey, when I was fortunate enough to be selected for the Full Year Incentive trip to Miami - an unforgettable experience and a true career highlight. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting a wide range of Account Managers across various verticals. Today, I have progressed to the role of Senior Team Leader, continuing to grow and contribute in a space where my strengths are fully aligned.

What advice would you give someone thinking about joining Softcat?

Go for it! You don’t need a background in Sales or Tech to succeed here. One of the best things about Softcat is its people-first culture - employee happiness is a priority. If you find yourself in a role that doesn’t quite suit your strengths, there’s always the opportunity to pivot into something that does, just like I did.
