Banking strategy is only as strong as the network
Why the network is becoming critical to customer experience, AI and operational resilience in retail banking


Retail banking is now judged in milliseconds. An app that hesitates, a branch that cannot support a digital advisory session, or a cloud service that fails over badly is no longer just an IT problem. It can affect customer experience, resilience, regulatory compliance and ultimately business performance.
For years, networking has been treated as the dependable but unglamorous layer underneath banking technology – necessary, complex and often expensive, but rarely part of the strategic conversation. That is becoming harder to justify. As retail banks invest in cloud platforms, AI-enabled services, digital channels, fraud prevention and branch transformation, the network increasingly determines what is possible and how well those investments work.
The point is simple: retail banks cannot build better customer experiences, stronger resilience or improved cybersecurity on top of a network designed for a different era.
For customers, the bank is the experience
Retail banking has moved beyond the ‘branch versus app’ debate. Customers expect the same quality of experience whether they are using a mobile app, speaking to a contact centre, visiting a branch or using an ATM. For many customers, that digital experience is their bank.
That creates a practical networking challenge. Customer journeys increasingly depend on low latency, high availability and consistent application performance across distributed environments. If the network cannot provide visibility into what customers are experiencing, IT teams can end up troubleshooting symptoms rather than fixing the underlying problem.
In practical terms, this means networking teams need to think beyond uptime:
• Can it tell the difference between a network problem and an application issue?
• Can it prioritise and secure traffic for critical services?
• Can it support video advisory, self-service devices and transactions in the same branch without creating congestion?
Legacy networks can hold back transformation
Cloud and AI are adding another layer of pressure. Banks are moving more data between branches, data centres, cloud platforms and applications, while AI workloads are creating new traffic patterns and capacity demands. This means that the network is no longer simply supporting AI adoption, but helping determine what is possible.
That does not mean that every retail bank needs to build high-performance AI infrastructure. The right approach needs to ensure that use cases and business objectives are carefully considered. However, every bank should be looking at how its network can support the next phase of digital services, whether that is multi-cloud connectivity, branch resilience through SD-WAN or modern data centre networking with integrated security.
Resilience is now a board-level network question
Most banks are progressing towards hybrid and multi-cloud operating models, while UK operational resilience requirements and DORA directives are putting greater emphasis on how critical services and third parties are managed. That has direct implications for the network, with redundant WAN paths, multi-cloud failover, visibility, segmentation and configuration tracking all becoming more important. A resilient bank needs to understand how services are connected, where dependencies sit, how failover works, whether controls are consistent and how quickly teams can identify and fix issues.
Resilience requirements vary across retail banking, from multinational institutions managing highly distributed estates and regulatory scrutiny to building societies looking for more resilient digital services while controlling costs. Ultimately, the network requirements differ, but the underlying principle is the same. The network is now part of the resilience strategy.
Resilience and security are also becoming increasingly inseparable. Branches, remote users, APIs, SaaS platforms, cloud workloads and third-party integrations have all expanded the attack surface. If one part of the environment is compromised, segmentation and access controls can help limit how far an attacker can move. The answer is not simply to add more security tools. Banks need security built into the network architecture, with the segmentation, access control and visibility needed to identify and contain threats quickly.
The network operating model is evolving
One of the most important points is also the least glamorous. Many network teams are stretched, complexity is increasing and the skills shortage challenge is set to intensify as an estimated 25% of network engineers approach retirement in 2028. Engineers are spending too much time on repetitive operational work, manual changes and reactive troubleshooting. The opportunity is not network automation alone; it is freeing up skilled people to focus on design, resilience, security, service improvement and business change.
AI-enabled network operations are already helping teams reduce some of the manual work involved in running large, distributed estates. They can help identify configuration drift, speed up troubleshooting and automate repetitive tasks. The goal isn’t to replace skilled engineers, but to give them more time to focus on design, resilience, security and service improvement.

Bring the network into the conversation
Networking might not be the first thing that comes to mind when banks talk about customer experience, AI or operational resilience, but it sits underneath all three.
