Microsoft is retiring the Select Plus licensing agreement in July 2015 having already phased in the more evolved Microsoft Products and Services Agreement (MPSA). Microsoft announced the retirement at its Worldwide Partner Conference last month, at which it also named Softcat its global Software Asset Management (SAM) Partner of the Year 2014. Softcat is urging its corporate customers to take advantage of the superior flexibility and purchasing opportunities of MPSA, which unlike Select Plus also allows access to Office 365 Online Services.

Jon Foulkes, Softcat’s Microsoft business manager said: “MPSA offers the same level of discount and purchasing flexibility as Select Plus, but with Office 365 services available under the same agreement. As a means of procurement this is already saving our customers time and hassle, by allowing quick and easy provisioning of Office 365 services alongside traditional on-premise software.” He added, “The Select Plus retirement announcement shouldn’t cause alarm to customers, and indeed may not require immediate action. That said, Softcat are on hand right now to advise all Select Plus customers, with a review of their licensing strategy in light of these changes. MPSA provides so much more flexibility and benefit to customers at no extra cost that we’re encouraging corporate customers to review now and understand the benefits offered.”

Softcat pioneered the introduction of the new Microsoft agreement structure, securing Microsoft’s first MPSA customer back in December 2013, and steadily migrating customers ever since. Microsoft will no longer offer new commercial Select Plus agreements after July 2015, but existing Select Plus customers can continue to purchase via their Select Plus agreements after this date. From July 2016, customers will no longer be able to make new purchases through their existing Select Plus agreements after their agreement anniversary.
