Kian Saville

Tell us a little bit about yourself

During 2013, I was diagnosed with a condition known as Neurofibromatosis Type 2 - a genetic condition - that prompts the growth of tumours along my nerves. Currently, I live with multiple tumours and have regular chemotherapy treatments every 4 weeks, which are part of my routine. My visual impairment is equally significant. I’m blind in my right eye and partially sighted in my left—a condition I’ve carried since birth.

When I’m not at Softcat, you’ll likely find me by the pool, immersed in my passion for swimming and coaching. Despite facing medical challenges, I train six evenings a week and I’ve achieved qualifications in the British Para-International Swimming Meet, including the World Series.

My Level 2 coaching credentials allow me to serve as the head coach for two of our club’s squads, and I also teach swimming to pre-school and SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities) children. For me, it’s about providing everyone - regardless of ability - the opportunity to learn this essential life skill. Witnessing my athletes compete and reach their goals fills me with huge pride.

Why did you apply to join Softcat?

I realised after completing my A-levels that university wasn’t really an option for me as I am always having extensive check-ups and scans, and wanted to focus on saving money for my future. From a very early age I have had a major interest in technology, and sport is a crucial part of my life - I have always factored this into any of my career decisions. After joining Softcat, I feel happy and, for the first time, I am able to enjoy both.

What was the application and joining process at Softcat like?

Softcat’s recruitment team were very accommodating towards me and my conditions. They made sure I had the relevant technology to conduct the interview, and I was amazed that they mentioned in my interview how, if my application was successful, they could support me with either software or hardware to help make me as comfortable as possible either at work or when working remotely at home.

Tell us the best thing about your job?

Like many Softcat colleagues, my days are dynamic and diverse. I frequently navigate new challenges, from handling sales requests to ensuring font sizes accommodate my visual needs. Even on chemo days, I remain undeterred. Rather than viewing my disabilities as obstacles, I see them as unique vantage points. They encourage me to explore alternative perspectives. Overall, I like to continuously seek improvement as I strive to assist others and remain open to fresh ideas.

How does Softcat support you with your disability?

Softcat are amazing at celebrating all backgrounds and cultures and our overall ‘vibe’ at the office is second to none. I have never had a job where I feel so supported. From the moment I applied to now, there is nothing else that this company could do for me to make me more at ease.

Tell us what the Empowering Disability and Neurodiversity (EDN) network means to you?

The EDN network means the world to me. Since joining, I spend time helping others through their conditions and offering advice from personal experiences – it’s something truly special. I’ve really enjoyed working alongside our EDN Network leads and being part of the main Core network group to help drive business decisions and strategies to help make our culture even more inclusive.

What difference can the EDN network make to anyone currently at or thinking of joining Softcat?

The EDN Network is an open forum for you to share your thoughts and feelings about anything in the company. You don’t have to have a disability or neurodiversity; it is open to everyone who wants to learn and share life experiences. More importantly, we are always happy to support in any way we can to make working in the office or at home the most comfortable it can be.

Has Softcat met your expectations since joining and if so in what way(s)?

Softcat has surpassed every expectation I have ever had. It is a brilliant, inclusive and culturally diverse company that champions its individuals as well as its success. I am so grateful to the Softcat family and I truly enjoy coming to work each and every day!

How has Softcat helped you to learn and develop?

My manager and department lead are totally special and are always supporting me in any way they can. They certainly challenge me to be the best I can be and are always supportive with any work I do. They are also looking for the next development opportunity for me so I can progress and support my team still further, whilst expanding my knowledge and understanding.

What single thing are you most proud of in your time at Softcat so far?

My single proudest achievement to date is to be recognised as a Highly Commended – Services Employee of the Month for my contributions to Softcat. I am also extremely proud of myself in building a stable and amazing foundation where I can grow and develop further and see where my Softcat career takes me as I have never had so many opportunities in my first year of employment.

What would you say to a friend who’s thinking of applying for a role at Softcat?

Absolutely go for it! It is the best company I have ever worked for, and I cannot thank Softcat enough for everything they have done for me in such a short amount of time.
