Mobile optimised Windows 8 has been out since 2010 and since then mobile device manufacturers have really started to embrace the touch screen revolution, creating devices that not only work brilliantly as a standard keyboard and mouse laptop; but also great as a touchy feeling device.

Working with Microsoft, we’ve rounded up our favourite 5 terrific touch screen devices running Windows 8 that you can buy right now. So, in alphabetical order lets get started:

1. Acer Aspire R13

Acer’s rather clever R13 looks like a traditional yet sturdy laptop on first glance. It all centres around a neatly packaged ‘Exel Aero’ hinge. The hinge allows the corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen to spin within the frame converting the notebook into one of 6 different modes. Our favourite being the ezel mode, which genuinely would be useful if you’re doing design work with a stylus or enjoy a bit of finger painting.

Overall, the device is very solidly built and looks like it would stand up to some regular business use; being taken in and out of meetings or being thrown into your bag. It also genuinely looks quite smart when you have it on your desk, thanks to the glossy finish.

2. Dell Venue 11i Pro

Dell’s Venue 11i Pro is the range topper of Dell’s popular Venue line of fondleslabs, jamming the hardware of a powerful notebook into a tablet chassis. With options up to Intel’s core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, no compromises have been made on the internals that lie behind the HD touch panel. Optional docks and keyboards allow for a great degree of versatility no matter what the use case.

Overall, the device offers exceptional performance and value for money, while the range of accessories, combined with interchangeable batteries make it ideal for wide deployments. As a tablet form factor, portability is exceptional, making this pocket sized (assuming you have quite large pockets) powerhouse ideal for travelling.

3. HP Elite X2 1011

HP’s Elite X2 1011 is one of HP’s first products to use the new Core M CPUs from Intel, offering Core performance in an ultra-low power SKU, allowing for great battery life and fanless designs. A detachable design, the Elite X2 demonstrates great flexibility, either as a tablet, or with the keyboard base to convert into a full notebook, as well as extending battery life.

Overall, the Elite X2 takes the best of HP’s Elite range and condenses it into a beautiful mobile device, taking styling cues from the lust-worthy Spectre X360. As with the rest of the Elite range, versatility is key, with a range of accessories, as well as one of the best keyboard docks on the market, and options for a Wacom pen for idle doodling, and Qualcomm’s Gobi LTE WWAN for mobile internet.

4. Lenovo X1 Carbon

The Thinkpad brand has been at the forefront of business mobility from the very start, and with this flagship ultrabook, Lenovo have sought to push the brand further and create the ultimate business portable. The combination of carbon fibre and magnesium alloys makes it robust but also very light, and the high performance hardware and crisp IPS screen mean that the device works as hard as you do. Lenovo have yet to resurrect the awesome keyboard from the Thinkpad 701 though, which is a shame.

Overall, the Lenovo X1 Carbon is the combination of the very best hardware available on the market in an attractive package. Very much a conventional notebook design, the X1 Carbon is ideal for power users and C-Suite execs alike, who need performance and durability in a lightweight chassis – finally, the Thinkpad is sexy!

5. Toshiba Z20T

The Toshiba Z20T is a detachable hybrid device with a clever docking system that allows for the reversal of the tablet on the keyboard dock for close up touch work, Netflixing etc, using the dock as a stand. The keyboard dock not only improves productivity, but offers a wide range of ports often lacking in ultra-portable devices including full sized VGA and HDMI, and 2 x USB 3.0 ports, minimising the amount of dongles you will inevitably lose.

Overall, the Toshiba Z20T combines the convenience and flexibility of a tablet with a variety of features and options which are often the reserve of larger notebooks. This allows the mobile user to take full advantage of the touch features of Windows 8.1 Pro, without having to compromise on inter-operability. Combined with the low power Intel Core M CPU, this is a device that can power through tasks, even if you can’t sneak into a coffee shop to nurse a small filter and avail yourself of some free electricity.
