At the 2016 Bett Awards, SMART Technologies’ president and chief executive Neil Gaydon presented Softcat with the ‘Most Innovative Deployment’ accolade in recognition of a substantial 71-screen SMART Technologies implementation in a UK independent school.
Representatives from Softcat joined a stream of educational professionals from across the UK attending the 32nd annual occurrence of the four-day Bett show. Secretary of State for Education Nicky Morgan and Sir David Attenborough were also in attendance.
Softcat provided its education customer with full end-to-end implementation and support, including an on-going training program to ensure teachers became fully proficient using the new technologies. Softcat implemented the project over the summer holidays to ensure minimal classroom disruption.
Simon Brant, independent education lead for Softcat, whose team designed, deployed and provided training and support to the school, won the ‘President’s Award’, a special award given by SMART Technologies. This is the first time that this award has been offered to someone outside the SMART Technologies business, and serves as acknowledgment of Simon’s individual enterprise and success in managing this major project.
Softcat’s public sector sales director Jamie Burke said: “We were delighted to accept this award, especially having received glowing feedback from the school in question. SMART’s technology has the potential to transform the teaching and learning experience, minimising planning time and maximising interaction and engagement for optimal learning. We have witnessed a lot of schools moving to this kind of solution and the SMART portfolio meets their requirements perfectly.”
He added: “Education is a huge area of focus for us. We have a dedicated team delivering tailored solutions into schools colleges and universities across the country, and our presence on all the major education frameworks enables us to get the best possible technology at good prices for educational establishments.”
Softcat’s customer, which operates in the independent sector, wanted to revolutionise the way that it delivers teaching in the classroom. Previously the school relied on legacy equipment including projectors, which didn’t support its aims to remain at the cutting edge of classroom technology. With teachers using multiple classrooms across three campuses, consistency was key to ensure that every teacher could walk into a classroom and be familiar with any solution.
As a result of having the new collaborative technology in place the school is already reporting a superior teaching and learning experience. SMART Technologies’ software gives them a more efficient method of planning, plus a whole new bank of resources. Thanks to the interactive touch screen devices, users can teach in a more efficient and engaging way. The school is now using classroom space far more effectively.
The school also looks forward to long-term cost benefits now that it doesn’t need to maintain its legacy equipment. The new devices are highly energy efficient, which ties into the school’s modern green ethos and makes it more attractive to the parents of prospective pupils.
