Softcat first pioneered the concept of licensing to the SME and corporate sector some 12 years ago, and to this day our foremost core competency still remains the cost effective provision of software licensing in volume.

There are a lot of ways of purchasing software – preinstalled on new equipment as OEM entitlements; fully packaged product, low volume transactional agreements and higher volume forecast based agreements. Software is available with or without maintenance, and “maintenance” can mean a lot of different things to different people. You can buy licences outright, buy various classifications of upgrades or subscribe to (or rent) your licences, on agreements that could be regional or global and could have additional price concessions in exchange for organisation wide adoption. You can also elect to have your applications hosted, sometimes by a manufacturer and sometimes by a third party, with payment made either outright or based on usage.

So effectively there are lots of ways to consume software, with subtle but important differences in the way in which individual manufacturers’ position and offer their products.

In order to successfully advise customers about the best way to buy software in volume there’s a lot to know.
